How to record your guitar.
Recording your guitar.
If you are a guitar player, perhaps you would like to record some of your ideas.
These days most people have a computer.
Years ago this would be an expensive option.
Now, this is affordable.
You will need a newer computer. I suggest that it should not be older than five years.
It can be running Windows 10 or 11 or Mac OS with at least 8 gigabytes of ram.
Minimum hard drive size should be no less than 500 gigabytes or bigger.
Sound files are large and take up a lot of space.
What do you need to record yourself?
You need a recording program.
There are lots, starting from a very reasonable price to an exorbitant price that most musicians cannot afford.
Also if you are just exploring this option do not shell out a lot of money. You can do a lot with a simple program.
Recording programs.
Audacity is free. Good if you just want to get a feel for recording your guitar.

Now you need a audio device to plug your guitar and a vocal mic into your computer.
These can start as little as $250.
They plug into the USB port on your computer.
This device converts the audio we are creating to a digital file in your computer.
Inexpensive ones will have 2 inputs, an xlr and a ¼ inch jack
More expensive units will have 4 to 16 or more inputs.
Microphone.
The Shure SM57 ($139.00 CAD) is an inexpensive microphone used in all major studios.
It works great on recording your electric guitar fthrough your guitar amp.
Condenser microphones have a wider frequency response and are well suited for recording acoustic instruments and vocals.
A good inexpensive one is the Audio-Technica AT2020 ($149.00 CAD)
The most expensive condenser microphone is the Neuman U87 at ($5125.00 CAD).
Fortunately there are a lot of choices ranging from $149.00 to$699.00 to $1899.00.
